NAMES OF AIRPORT IN VIETNAM

Currently, the list of airports in Vietnam consists of 22 airports, including 10 international airports, which not only meet the needs of transporting passengers, but also contribute to promoting economic trade, import and export of goods. So, which airports should tourists to Vietnam choose to be suitable for their destination?

I - Overview

The first Vietnam airport was Lang Co airport, located in Minh Thanh commune, Son Duong district, Tuyen Quang province in 1945 for the purpose of receiving aid from allies. After more than 60 years of operation, Vietnam's aviation industry has gradually shown an important role in economic and cultural trade. 

By the end of 2019, Vietnam's airport has welcomed 14.3 million international visitors, accounting for 79.8% of visitors to Vietnam and up 15.2% compared to 2018. 

Currently, Vietnam has exploited three types of airport:

- Civil airports: International Airports; Domestic airports

- Military airports

- Military and civil mixed airports

In particular, civil airports are the main airports in Vietnam  serving the travel needs of international and domestic tourists. Some Vietnamese airlines that tourists can choose to use passenger transport services include:

- Vietnam Airlines: Vietnam national airline, established on January 15, 1956 in Hanoi

- VietJet Air: Low-cost airline, established in November 2007

- Bamboo Airways: The youngest airline, established on July 9, 2018.

- Pacific Airline: The first low-cost airline in Vietnam, established on April 13, 1991.

1 - Top well-known Vietnam airports in the northern region

- Noi Bai International Airport: The second largest civil airport with separate domestic and international terminals. In 2019, Noi Bai international airport welcomed 29.2 million passengers. 

Located in Phu Minh ward, Soc Son district, Hanoi city, from this second biggest airport in Vietnam  to the city center is about 30km and it takes about 1 hour traveling by car or taxi.

- Cat Bi International Airport: About 5km from Hai Phong city center and first built in 1955. Currently, Cat Bi airport can welcome up to 1,000 passengers per hour. In 2019, it welcomed 930,000 international visitors. 

Location: Cat Bi ward, Hai An district, Hai Phong city, Hai Phong province.

Note: From Cat Bi International Airport, tourists can easily move to tourist destinations such as Hai Phong city (5km - 10 minutes by taxi), Do Son beach (42km - 20 minutes by taxi), Cat Ba island (10km). Dinh Vu port (20 minutes by car & 45 minutes by ferry), Ha Long Bay (62km). 

- Van Don International Airport: This is a new and best airport to fly into Vietnam which was officially put into operation on December 30, 2018 with a capacity of about 2.5 million passengers/year. This is an important project to contribute to promoting tourism development in Ha Long and Van Don key economic zones. In 2019, the airport welcomed more than 10,000 international visitors. Location: Doan Ket commune, Van Don district, Quang Ninh province.

Note: The airport is convenient for moving to famous tourist destinations such as Ha Long Bay (53km - 1h5p), Lan Ha Bay (64km - 1 hour, Tuan Chau port, car and 1 hour by train), Quan Lan (73km) - 1 hour 7 minutes by car at Cai Rong port and 1 hour by train), etc. Not only that, thanks to the presence of the Hanoi - Ha Long expressway (304km - 2 hours by car), the inter-province transportation is also more convenient. 

2 - Famous airports in the the Central Region

- Da Nang International Airport: One of the three major international airports in Vietnam, the largest airport in the Central region with a total area of ​​842 hectares. In 2019, the number of international visitors to Vietnam through Da Nang airport reached 3,522,928 arrivals, each week welcoming about 1,160 international and domestic flights. Location: Duy Tan ward, Hai Chau district, Da Nang city, Da Nang province.

Note: The airport is located in a prime location, which is convenient for tourists to travel to famous tourist destinations such as Da Nang (800m – 3 minutes), Hoi An (30km – 45 minutes), Hue (92km – 2 hours), Ba Na Hill (42.5km – 1 hour 25 minutes), Lang Co (33km – 50 minutes), Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park - Son Doong Cave (313km – 6 hours), etc. However, being in Da Nang city, during peak hours (6:45 – 7:45, 11:00 – 12:00, 16:30 – 18:30), visitors may experience traffic congestion, making it a little more difficult to move.

- Cam Ranh International Airport: The only & best airport in Vietnam that welcomes more international visitors than domestic ones. In 2019, the airport welcomed about 3.5 million international visitors, as recorded on December 19, 2019. The airport was first put into operation in 1973 and was upgraded to an international airport on August 16, 2007. Location: Nguyen Tat Thanh ward, Cam Hai Dong district, Cam Ranh city, Khanh Hoa.

Note: From here, visitors can easily move to beautiful tourist destinations such as Nha Trang City (35.5km – 45 minutes), Da Lat (146km – 3 hours 15 minutes), Phan Rang (63km – 1 hour 15 minutes), Phan Thiet (192km – 3 hours 30 minutes), etc. Before June 30, 2018, the airport was often in overload, after the inauguration of Cam Ranh International Terminal, the capacity reached 2.4-4, 8 million international visitors a year.

- Phu Cat International Airport: Civil and military airport in Vietnam with a capacity of 4 million passengers per year. The airport was first built in 1966 under the name of Go Quanh Airport for military service purposes and was transformed into a mixed airport in 1984. Location: X23X + 7J, Cat Tan commune, Phu Cat district, Binh Dinh province

3 - Popular airports in southern Vietnam

- Tan Son Nhat International Airport: The largest airport in Vietnam with the largest area - 850ha, the design capacity of 28 million passengers per year. In 2019, the number of visitors to Vietnam through Tan Son Nhat airport reached 40.13 million passengers, up 4.5% compared to 2018. Location: Truong Son Street, Ward 2, Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City.

Note: The airport has various and convenient services. The number of flights to and from Tan Son Nhat airport is great and the flight time is flexible, so it is very convenient for tourists to come and go. Convenient to travel to tourist destinations such as Ho Chi Minh city center (7km – 15minutes), Cu Chi Tunnels (40km – 1 hour 30 minutes), Vung Tau (92km – 2 hours 10 minutes), Ben Tre (27km – 1 hour 10 minutes), etc. Moreover, being located in the city, visitors will have to watch out for traffic congestion in the peak hours such as: 6:00 - 8:00 and 16:00 - 18:00 every day.

- Can Tho International Airport: Another Can Tho Vietnam airport name is Tra Noc airport, built in 1961, but it wasn’t officially put into operation to serve the needs of passenger transportation until January 3, 2009. On January 1, 2011, it was upgraded to an international airport with a capacity of 3-5 million passengers/year. Location: No. 179B, Le Hong Phong Street, Long Hoa Ward, Binh Thuy District, Can Tho City.

Note: Convenient travel to tourist destinations such as Vung Tau (259km – 5 hours 30 minutes), Ben Tre (118km – 2 hours 50 minutes), Can Tho (7.2km – 15 minutes), Con Dao (87.1km – 2 hours 2 minutes to Tran De port and 4 hours of high-speed train to Ben Dam port), etc. However, the number of international routes to Can Tho airport is quite small - 02 flights to Seoul - Korea and Taipei - Taiwan.

- Phu Quoc International Airport: Officially put into operation in late November 2012, this is also the 5th biggest airport in Vietnam in terms of the number of international passengers. The designed capacity of the airport is about 7 million passengers/year, and can welcome 3,500 people/hour during peak hours. In 2019, Phu Quoc international airport welcomed 392,000 international passengers, up 35.5% compared to 2018. Location: Duong To commune, Phu Quoc district, Kien Giang province.

Note: Phu Quoc Airport has many direct international flights, so it is convenient for tourists to travel. Some countries that have direct flights to Phu Quoc include Thailand, Russia, Korea, China, Italy, Japan, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway, etc. The airport is about 30km away from the travel, vacation or amusement destinations on Phu Quoc island, so visitors should contact the accommodation suppliers for free pick-up and drop-off assistance.
