Tam Coc literally means “Three grottoes” is a combination of two distinct attractions: Tam Coc - a flooded cave karst system, and a series of mountain pagodas located in Ninh Hai Commune, Hoa Lu District, Ninh Binh province. Tam Coc Vietnam is also known by another name as “Halong bay on land” due to its romantic and peaceful sceneries, which are very charming and amorous. 

I - How to get from Hanoi to Tam Coc Vietnam? 

Tam Coc is located about 90km to the south of Hanoi. Travelers can easily get there by bus, train, or motorbike.

By bus
Travel by bus from Hanoi to Tam Coc also takes you about 3 hours. You can easily catch one with the route to Ninh Binh in Giap Bat bus station with the ticket around $4. However, those buses will not drop you off in Tam Coc directly but stop at Ninh Binh bus station where you take a cab to go to this place with the cost is not much more expensive than motorbike.
By train
To get here by train is also a convenient choice because there are some trains from Hanoi to Ninh Binh station everyday namely SE1( 19:30 pm) reaching Ninh Binh at 21:46, SE3 (22:00) - Ninh Binh (00:10), SE5 (09:00) – Ninh Binh (11:21), SE7 (06:00) arriving in Ninh Binh at 08:22 and SE19 (20:05) - Ninh Binh at 23:00. The trip might take you about 2 or 2.5 hours to Ninh Binh station. From there, you can take a cab to go to Tam Coc.

According to an old chronicle named "Thai Vi Quoc te Ngoc ky", Tam Coc Ninh Binh is home of several historic relics related to the Tran dynasty and has witnessed a number of ups and downs in Vietnam's history. Legend has it that King Tran Thai Tong had enjoyed contemplating beautiful landscapes around the country after abdicating in favor of King Tran Thanh Tong.
When he reached Vu Lam, he was amazed by the scene of rolling majestic mountains of this landscape. He decided to build a small chamber to relax in Ca Cave - one of the three stunning caves situated there. However, the space inside the cave had shrunk gradually so he moved to the surrounding area which is Thai Vi Temple now. Tam Coc also acted as the base during the Second War against the Mongolian and the Indochina War.

- Adult who are over 1.4 metter high ticket: $5 / pax
- Children who are under 1.4 metter high ticket: $2.5 / pax
- Child under 1 meter: free
If you want to discover Tam Coc by boat, you may have to pay about $7 / boat for 2 foreigners. 

3 - Landscape

Due to geologists, a very long time ago this place was full up with flapping sea waves. Several centuries passed by, the waves eroded into the cliffs creating different shapes of limestone systems. Nowadays, to reach Tam Coc Cave, travelers usually start from the center wharf by boat. Along the Ngo Dong river, through rice fields, travelers will have time to enjoy the cool air, beautiful sky with clouds, the natural mountainous terrain in various shapes, and the limestone caves lying on the Ngo river crossing peacefully. The harmonic image created by the yellow color of Tam Coc rice fields and green of water and limestone mountains is a remarkable feature of this place.

4 - Cave systems

'Tam Coc' has a meaning of three grottos in Vietnamese (“Tam'' means ba, “Coc” means cave), including Ca Cave, Hai Cave and Ba cave. All three caves are created by Ngo Dong river through mountains, therefore, a boat ride that runs along this river through caves, rice fields, and unique karst rocks will offer you an extraordinary feeling like cruising down a natural kingdom.

This is the largest cave with a length of 127m and a cave mouth of 20m wide. Besides, it's also considered as the most beautiful cave owing to many majestic natural arts deep inside. 
Hai Cave
Located nearly 1km far from Ca Cave, Hai Cave is about 60km long. It impresses travelers by a diversity of sparkling stalactites on its ceiling. 
Ba Cave
